LOCAL INFORMATION

The first thing that hits you about Chamonix is the scenery, you can't possibly drive into the town without being impressed. Being at the foot of Mont Blanc, Chamonix was destined to be a popular resort from the start, nearly a century ago. Amazingly, Chamonix seems to have developed and matured into the perfect town enticing you with its olde worlde charm, streets that you could wander round for days, a diversity of nationalities and more facilities than anyone could need. On top of this, the mountains are the best without a shadow of a doubt and the nightlife is incredible.

Chamonix Town is the hub of the world famous ski and alpine area known as the Haute Savoie, situated in the north west of the Alps 15km from both the Italian and Swiss borders. Mont Blanc (4808m) and its chain of peaks dominate the valley. Chamonix is probably best known as the skiing and alpine capital of the world. As a destination it has a reputation for the extreme and this, whilst undoubtedly true, can mask a wide array of other sporting and leisure activities that can be enjoyed here. A mecca for mountaineers, you can also walk the hundreds of miles of beautiful footpaths, try mountain biking, paragliding, play golf or just enjoy peace and quiet in a beautiful place. Chamonix town has that cosmopolitan feel with a vast selection of restaurants and shops. The town hosted the first winter Olympic Games in 1924 and has been a popular all year round destination since.
